About Our Ranch
How it Started
After twenty years in the fire sprinkler industry and five successful years running our own business in Washington, we made the bold decision to sell everything and pursue a life filled with greater meaning. Starting with raw land, we built our ranch from scratch, learning and adapting as we went. In the process, we unearthed an abundance of rocks on the property, which inspired the name Rocky Box Ranch!
What began as a simple effort to raise enough food for our family soon blossomed into something more significant. As we faced the challenges of ranching, we realized not only did we possess the necessary skills, but we also had the drive to expand our vision. Along the way, we learned that only 1% of the meat consumed in the U.S. comes from independent, small-scale ranches like ours, while an astonishing 99% is supplied by factory farms. Even more troubling was discovering that a considerable portion of this meat—particularly in the hog industry—is controlled by foreign entities, with 80% owned by China under the umbrella of Smithfield. The meat produced in these massive operations is often inhumane and laden with hormones, antibiotics, and other chemicals that have no place in our food.
We believe that everyone deserves better. Recognizing the opportunity to provide high-quality, ethically raised meat for our community made it an obvious choice to expand and share what we were doing. Offering a healthier, more humane alternative to the factory-farmed system felt not just like a responsibility, but a privilege—one that aligned perfectly with the values that brought us here in the first place.
Raising Quality Livestock with Integrity
At Rocky Box Ranch, we're raising quality livestock. After experimenting with several breeds of pigs, we settled on Berkshire pigs. All of our breeding stock is registered, ensuring high-quality genetics.
In addition to pigs, we have raised registered Highland cattle from the very beginning. With the heavy predator presence in the Swan Valley of Montana, we also breed and raise registered AKC Anatolian Shepherds to help protect our livestock. We're committed to sustainable and ethical practices and providing the highest quality products for our customers.
